Sam has faith and forgives unconditionally, to forgive is divine. Sam has also accepted accountability for his mistakes, he’s virtually the only character to do so while taking on additional blame that isn’t his. Sam paid the price for mistakes and sins of others (his mother selling him out, his brother breaking the first seal, Cas knowingly helped start the Apocalypses), making him a messiah like character
Sam once asked Dean if free will is only for him. Dean has an idea how Sam and the world should be, when it doesn’t match his idea then pretty much his world goes to hell. Sam died and Dean commit blasphemy of bringing Sam back to life, unknowingly stole him from heaven. But he’ll do it again, defying the natural and Godly order in order to set his own world right again. He puts himself above God and that is his downfall, as it was for Lucifer and Castiel
Castiel declared himself God, a blasphemous act that started his downfall. Gadreel and Gabriel discovered almost too late that humans are better than angels and they should be protecting and helping people, not callously using them. Cas’ brief stint as a human allowed him to experience guilt and some sympathy to one human, Sam, but his main concern is for his own brethens and heaven, so he killed to steal another’s grace’s, still willing to commit blasphemy for his own agenda.
I find it interesting that when our boys are overtaken by something evil, Dean becomes a demon, Sam becomes an angel, and Cas becomes a leviathan. There’s probably something deep and fascinating here, but I can’t really put it into words.me taking a stab.
