This scene was so great. Sam’s not threatening the kid. He’s not escalating the situation. He just lets the kid know that he’s watching and he’s willing to intervene on behalf of the waitress, so now is the moment to knock it off. He’s not lashing out, he’s not being aggressive. He doesn’t have to be: he knows he’s got it under control, and that’s what’s important. He doesn’t have to peacock about it, he doesn’t have to prove anything. He just knows. He doesn’t have to convince every single person in the restaurant that he’s a dangerous badass and therefore has it under control. He’s not eager to intervene. But if he has to, he will.
I haven’t seen Sam this self-assured in – I don’t know, maybe ever? He’s quiet about it, he’s not trying to prove anything, because he trusts himself. He knows what he can do. You can tell he’s alert, that he’s watching what happens really closely, and he’s ready to react to it. He’s confident in his own abilities and his own judgment. And when the kid does escalate the situation, he subdues him pretty much instantly.
This is what Sam is like when Dean isn’t around to question his judgment and tell him he’s incompetent. And man is it great.
